Hull's New Theater opened on Saturday 16 October 1939 with Noel Gay's Me and My Girl. The theater owes its existence to Channel Island-born Peppino Santangelo. Pepino came to the city in 1924 to join Hull's troupe at the Little Theater in Kingston Square. After turning around the struggling company, Pepino turned his attention to the assembly room next door. The Town Hall was the site of readings by great Victorian writers such as Charles Dickens in 1859 and 1860, whose visits are commemorated by a blue plaque on the building.
